Q: I noticed that the bolts on my bike most grease applied to them, but others are Loctite it? What are some of the needs of one or the other? From: Matt
Grease or oil? This is an effective and thoughtful questions. The reason for the general lubrication of bicycle bolts to prevent seizing. Different metals have a tendency to corrosion in contact with each other. Most bicycle bolt steel, most of the components are aluminum. Even if you have a steel frame, steel bolt, grease will help keep at bay and maintain the water treatment, while metal rust. In addition, their resistance to corrosion, grease, help protect and lubricate the thread easy to turn the thread stripping aluminum parts. Finally, this lubrication, to prevent the bolt backing out. This is a bit counterintuitive, but engineering dry bolts, because there is a "ratchet" themselves, they do not have a tendency to seize the nuts.
Titanium, the anti-seize is a good choice because it provides greater protection for their different metal bonding. This mainly applies to titanium frames. Modern titanium bolts seem to not have corrosion problems, however, and I never had a grasp the problem, use their oil.
So, what part of get Loctite? This is usually reserved for brake bolts, chainring bolts, suspension pivot bolts. Just make sure the metal, clean and free of grease or other Loctite will not hold. Also, be sure to use the blue formula, which is non-permanent members. I like the version, while adhering to, rather than liquid, because it is easier to apply and stand still, and my part of the installation.
My favorite alternative Loctite is a plumber's Teflon tape. As long as the tape wrapped around a direction to tighten the bolts tightened 3-4 times the thread tape. Like a lock nut, and only in this case nylon insert a tape function, nylon bolts. Lock the water pipe tape as a substitute for the other thread is ready, but not like the glue has been broken to remove the bolts.
